Training needs in adolescent, young adult and transition care

Recently, the young adult and adolescent specialist interest group, including YDEF's own Kelly Cheer conducted a study assessing training needs of both endocrine and paediatric trainees in diabetes and endocrinology. The results of this are published in the British Journal of Vascular Disease.

Please take some time to read the paper and the points discussed here

YDEF Annual Day 7th March 2017

The YDEF Annual Day brings over a hundred specialist registrars and young consultants from across the UK on the eve of Diabetes UK Annual Processional Conference to attend an excellent, free day of lectures and workshops.

ABCD National Diabetes Consultant Mentorship Programme (NDCMP)

The NDCMP is a national initiative providing mentorship for newly-appointed consultants in diabetes and endocrinology. The purpose of the NDCMP is to support the development of consultants in diabetes and endocrinology for the future benefit of themselves and, thereby, our speciality and our patients.

NEYD - view from the trainees

The North European Young Diabetologists meeting was a resounding success and continued the tradition of high calibre events organised by YDEF. Here we have two attendees giving their unique perspectives on the meeting this year...

YDEF Shape of Training response

The YDEF represent D&E trainees on the British Medical Association Multi-Speciality Working Group. In 2012 Sir David Greenaway, Professor of Economics, was appointed chair of the independent Shape of Training Review. This expert advisory group were tasked with reforming the structure of postgraduate medical education and training across the UK  .

Diabetes UK: Living with Diabetes Days

Diabetes UK are launching an exciting national programme of Living with Diabetes Days, and want YOU to get involved and help.

Clinical Endocrinology On-Line Modules have now launched

We are pleased to announce that the new educational initiative for higher specialist trainees in Endocrinology has now been launched. The team behind the SfE journal Clinical Endocrinology and Wiley Health have created some clever on-line content which can be accessed here.

The first three modules cover, Phaeo crisis, oligomenorrhoea and giant prolactinomas.

SfE: Emergency Endocrine Guidance

The Society for Endocrinology’s Clinical Committee has recently produced three new succinct and clinically useful Emergency Endocrine Guidance Documents; useful for the acute medical and emergency wards:

Acute Hypocalcaemia (for use in adult patients),

Acute Hypercalcaemia, and

Pituitary Apoplexy.

Junior doctor contract

As most of you may be aware, there has been a lot of concerns regarding the proposed change to junior doctor's contract by the government and the Review Body on Doctor's and Dentist's Remuneration (DDRB). Social media and more recently national press have been highlighting the concerns on a regular basis. There have been various statements from the Royal Colleges and the British Medical Association and we would like to keep our members up to date on current events that will no doubt have a significant effect on the profession (and ourselves). Please take some time to have a look at some of the links below to keep yourself well informed.

The YDEF have added the voice of D&E trainees to the BMA response. We welcome and celebrate Scotland and Wales' decision not to impose a new contract and call for our government to review their proposals based on transparent, evidence-based negotiation

Specialty Certificate Exam MCQ book

The SCE may have recently taken place but for those of you who are waiting until next year, it is never too early to plan ahead! We are happy to direct our members to this useful resource/MCQ book written for those of you planning to take the exam.

It contains over 300 best of five questions with explanatory answers, each accurately reflecting the layout of questions in the exam.

The book is divided into six subject areas, covering all the main themes of the exam, and providing a thorough assessment of the candidate's endocrinological knowledge. Uniquely, the explanatory answers include references to guidelines and other sources to enable candidates' further reading and study.

Further more, all royalties are going towards a charity 'Pratham' for underprivileged children in India.
