Diabetes UK is urgently looking for a doctor to cover their residential event at Caythorpe Court, near Grantham in Lincolnshire, for the weekend of 24th – 27th August 2012. The weekend has been organised and paid for 30 children to attend, but needs a doctor to ensure it can go ahead.

Attending a Diabetes Camp is part of the curriculum; gives training in community diabetes, as well as being a fun and worthwhile thing to do.

Diabetes UK organise and run Care Events for Children and Young People to take them away on weekend and week long residential events where they practice rotating injection sites, carb counting and increasing their diabetes management.

As I’m sure you are aware, what makes Diabetes UK Care Events different and unique from respite holidays is that we provide an opportunity for informal learning and a space for the children and young people to grow in confidence, learning both from their peers and the team of HCPs at the event. It offers opportunities to try moving test sites, practice carb counting (often for the first time) and begin taking control of their insulin regime.

These tools are vital for children and young people with Diabetes to thrive. The dedicated team of Health Care Professional; Doctors, Nurses and Dietitians is vital to the success of these events. Diabetes UK prides itself on offering such a reward and life changing events.

These Care Events are run completely by volunteers, and must have health care professionals on site in order to run. Volunteering on one of our events provides a opportunity for you to increase your skills in the field of diabetes, and for those of you with many years of experience to develop your understanding in a non clinical setting. The changes that can be seen in the children as a result of our events are hugely rewarding, and all our regular volunteers feel they have learned massively about how their patients experience living with diabetes in their day to day lives. It also allows health care professionals to work as part of a team of Doctors, Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, and Dietitians, all of whom are volunteers.

Diabetes UK have organised a residential weekend event taking place at the end of August for 30 children, at a lovely PGL venue Caythorpe Court, near Grantham in Lincolnshire and at present there are no doctors covering the event. The venue has been paid for, along with all of the activities for the weekend of 24th – 27th August 2012, but we must have a doctor on site at all times for the event to go ahead.

There are already have three nurses, two dietitians and a whole team of helpers, but they urgently need more medical cover to ensure the event provides sufficient support and clinical expertise to the young people who they are looking after. All they need is one senior doctor to make the event a success.

Diabetes UK may be in a position to be able to pay for locum cover for any shifts you have over these dates, so it always worth contacting us to see if we would be able to arrange something with your medical staffing team.

If you are in a position to volunteer for Diabetes UK please contact Julia Cloke directly on 020 7424 1848 or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
