We have taken the initiative to drive recruitment to our speciality by organising regional 'Taster Evenings in Diabetes and Endocrinology' with support from ABCD, Diabetes UK and the Society for Endocrinology. Get in contact if you're arranging an event in your area so that we can help.

What are these?

YDEF Taster Evenings are opportunities for junior doctors to gain an overview on specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology. Delivered by senior trainees, consultants and academics, topics covered include:
• Planning your medical career in the era of diabetes and obesity epidemic.
• Endocrinology and diabetes in the outpatient setting.
• Endocrine emergencies and inpatient diabetes.
• Work-‐life balance and flexible training opportunities.
• Research opportunities in Endocrinology.
• Opportunities to gain organisational and management skills.
• Becoming a specialist in diabetes and endocrinology-‐practical steps.
• Patient perspectives and demonstration of insulin pumps and other modern technologies.

How do we know these work?

A pilot event was organised in Edinburgh with support from the  University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Centre for Endocrinology. 25 FY/CMT doctors from across central Scotland attended.

  • When asked ‘how likely were you to apply for specialty training in Diabetes and Endocrinology before coming to this event?’ only 23 % scored 4 or 5 on a scale of 1-‐5 ranging from ‘very unlikely’ to ‘definitely’.
  • When asked ‘how likely were you to apply for specialty training in Diabetes and Endocrinology after coming to this event?’ 91 % scored 4 or 5 on a scale of 1-‐5 ranging from ‘very unlikely’ to ‘Definitely’, showing a clear shift in trainees’ perception of our specialty.
Of course we won't know until these doctors apply for ST positions, but at least on the short term, we are making an impact. Download a full report of the pilot taster evening here.
