Research
The rapidly increasing incidence of diabetes, diversity of endocrine conditions, and significant pharmaceutical activity within the speciality make diabetes & endocrinology a fertile area for research. That research truly stretches from the bench to the bedside and beyond. There are amply opportunities for trainees who wish to become more involved in diabetes & endocrinology and some examples are included below.
Medical Students
Special study modules & intercalated degrees provide an inroad to research in this speciality for medical students. The Society for Endocrinology, together with the Royal Society of Medicine offer prizes dedicated to medical students and reduced rates can usually be negotiated for many national conferences.
Early Trainees
Many trainees begin their research career supported by the Academic Foundation Programme (AFP) and subsequent NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship Posts (ACF). It’s important to note that these aren’t essential for future research careers, and many trainees find other paths. The speciality of AFP posts is less important than the research skills learnt.
Trainees looking to pursue research careers should think about applying to Diabetes UK Professional Conference where their research can be presented at either the YDEF day or even the main conference. There is a prize offered by YDEF for the best research by trainees.
Doctoral Research
There are a wide range of funding opportunities for PhD’s and budding trainees should talk to their potential supervisors to see what fits their project best. The NIHR fund many clinical PhD opportunities but Diabetes UK also fund the Sir George Alberti Fellowships, which may be perfect for your project! In addition to identifying funding opportunities for your PhD it is essential, if you are in a training programme, to liaise with your Training Programme Director to ensure arrangements are made to go Out of Programme – it is a shame how many researchers get caught up with difficulties here.
Whilst doing your research don’t forget to present and share it nationally and internationally – the North European Young Diabetes Association represents and ideal opportunity to share your progress with other like-minded trainees.

Beyond the PhD
By this point you will likely be experienced in your own research field and opportunities to further research, be that Clinical Lecturer roles or similar. Most importantly – please help support the next generation of budding researchers!
